Camping Safety 101: How to Stay Safe in the Great Outdoors

Camping is a huge amount of fun — but it also comes with some safety risks. With this in mind, it’s important that you follow the camping safety tips below so that you can ensure your camping adventure is a safe one.

When it comes to modern camping, some of the biggest safety risks include:

  • Animal attacks
  • Bug and insect bites
  • Exhaustion
  • Dehydration
  • Getting lost
  • Injuries

It’s important to note that the odds of you experiencing any of these problems are significantly low. Like with anything in life, though, it’s always best to be cautious and follow proper safety measures. This way, it makes for a much better experience.

So, what are the different ways that you can stay safe while camping? It’s time to find out!

Use a Roof Tent Instead of a Ground Tent

Roof tents are significantly safer than ground tents.

The reason for this is simple: roof tents are installed on the rack system of your vehicle (e.g., truck or car). Naturally, this means you get to sleep around 6 to 8 feet off the ground, so any animals or other threats simply won’t be able to reach you.

If you want to get a roof tent today, use RoofBunk. You can choose either a hard shell or soft shell roof tent, depending on your personal preference. Whichever type of roof tent you decide to go with, you’ll be much safer in the wild as a result.

Always Take a First Aid Kit with You

Injuries can happen while camping — especially when it goes dark outside.

For example, if you or one of your friends trips up during the night, it’s very easy to sprain an ankle. When something like this happens, you need to have a first aid kit on-site so that you can handle the injury in a quick manner if it’s serious.

Remember, most first aid kids are usually small and compact, so they’re easy to store in both tents and vehicles.

Drink Lots of Water

Carrying water with you when camping is essential.

Even if the weather is only mild, it doesn’t take much to get dehydrated out in the wild. You can stop this from happening by drinking lots of water, but it’s generally recommended that you don’t take plastic water bottles with you. Instead, use a glass or metal one.

Take a Portable Charger

Many people use camping as an opportunity to take a break from technology and reconnect with nature. As great as this can be, it’s still important that you at least take a smartphone with you as well as a portable charger, as it could be a lifesaver if something bad were to happen to you.

For example, if there was a medical emergency and you needed to call for help but your smartphone was out of battery, the portable charger would save the day (literally). Plus, portable chargers are extremely cheap, so it’s ridiculous not to buy one.

Spray Insect Repellent

Insect repellent is great for all-around safety while camping. By spraying it on your skin and clothing, you can prevent bites from mosquitoes, flies, and other insects. Not to mention, this is also great for at nighttime when you want to experience some peaceful sleep, as it’s pretty much guaranteed that no insects will bother you.
